Cleaning Out Your College Kid’s Bedroom
Are you preparing to send your son or daughter off to college? Do you intend to turn their bedroom into a guest room, or a crafts and hobbies room for yourself? Before you can transform their bedroom, take some time this summer to work with your college student to organize their belongings and clean out their bedroom. After cleaning out their bedroom, you may want to consider custom storage solutions to help get the most out of the space.
Eighteen years is a long time to spend in one bedroom. Not sure where to start organizing your college students things? Here are some tips to get you started:
Work together – This is the most important step. Do not take this project on yourself. Work with your college student to sort through and organize his or her belongings.
Organize clothes – Work with your son or daughter to sort through clothes and decide what will go with them to college, what can be donated and what just needs to be thrown out.
Take special care of memorabilia – Just because they’re moving on to college doesn’t mean their high school sports trophies aren’t important anymore. Take some time with your student to create memory books or scrapbooks for photos, papers and keepsakes. Create a designated storage space for their childhood and teenage memorabilia.
Pack and store their belongings – Help your child decide what they need to take with them and what can be stored away. You may want to keep space in the bedroom closet to store their things, or move them to another closet or room in your home.
Once you and your soon-to-be college student have spent time cleaning out the room and organizing their belongings, you can transform the room for other purposes. Consider how you can rearrange furniture to maximize the space for your alternative needs. Keep in mind that your son or daughter will still need a place to sleep and study when they are home on vacation. Be sure they will still feel at home. Even if you plan to use their room as a hobby or craft room while they are gone, be sure you don’t completely eliminate their personality from the room. You may even want to keep some of their framed pictures dispersed throughout the room.
